For businesses, communications around sustainability, corporate governance, societal issues, and impact have become more sophisticated over the last ten years. Fearing accusations of greenwashing, many companies moved away from sweeping proclamations and headline-generating goals to develop more strategic initiatives delivering measurable impact.

Today, Sustainability—which includes a company’s approach to DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)—has become a lightning rod topic, yet again, where culture wars are clashing with business operations. As a result, in the past few months, we’ve seen companies publicly affirm or abandon their initiatives or simply rebrand them.

In this unique time, how do we, as communicators, adapt our approach to communications and marketing regarding decarbonization, corporate governance and social issues? What new challenges are we facing with our stakeholders—from customers to investors to employees? And what lessons can we take forward?
