Over the past decade, sustainability has been recognized as a crucial part of a company’s operational model, significantly impacting ways of working, corporate reputation, and engagement with both internal and external stakeholders. However, recent abrupt changes in public policy, sentiment, and discourse have introduced tension and uncertainty regarding sustainability and other social impact initiatives, as well as the communications surrounding them.
Currently, companies and organizations are attempting to navigate these challenging conditions by adopting various strategies–from maintaining their commitments to simply rebranding or renaming their policies to fully abandoning initiatives–each presenting its own distinct advantages and disadvantages. During this unprecedented period, how should we, as communicators, adjust our approach to sustainability and social impact communications and marketing when fear and uncertainty are muddying the waters? What new challenges are anticipated from our customers, investors, and employees? And what lessons can we draw from these experiences for the future?
